In France and Germany, the therapeutic use of essential oils has been the subject of much research and attention by the medical community. It is not unusual in these countries for a physician to prescribe oral doses of pharmaceutically pure essential oils to treat many conditions that are routinely treated with antibiotics elsewhere in the world. In contrast, throughout the United Kingdom aromatherapy has been primarily viewed as a cosmetic and aesthetic therapy, and oral use has not been widespread.
Many essential oils, however, are safe to ingest in limited amounts (2 to 3 drops in a carrier or excipient). The commercial food industry uses them abundantly as flavoring agents, and the FDA provides a food-grade rating to indicate purity and safety. These commercially available aromatic oils are all rated “food grade.” Many are not even pure essential oils, but rather compounds made up of synthetic fragrances mixed with oils of questionable quality. These oils have no therapeutic effect, should not be used for aromatherapy applications, and should certainly never be ingested!
As our world becomes smaller, and information circles the globe in seconds, books are printed in translation, and aromatherapists get training overseas, a discussion of oral use is becoming unavoidable. As people learn about essential oils and wish to take advantage of their potential healing power, the issue inevitably evolves from a question of therapists insulating themselves from potential legal problems to one of educating the public to prevent them from self-administering potentially toxic doses.
